What to do and what not to do when moving furniture

It can be more difficult than you might think to move furniture yourself. It's worth asking yourself if it's worth spending a lot of money to move furniture when you can buy brand-new furniture afterward.

These are the DON'Ts and DO's when you move furniture to a new place.

Do not move furniture without following these steps

It is best to know what to do in order to safely move furniture.

  • Do an inventory of all furniture in your house and make an informed decision on what to do with it. Your judgment should be based on current condition, quality, and functionality, as well as sentimental value.
  • Do go through all of your furniture and decide which pieces you will take with you. You will need to spend a lot of money on transportation because furniture is often heavy and large. Is it worth it?
  • Do create a floor plan for your new home. This will help you determine whether it is necessary to move your furniture. It's not always about the higher moving costs involved in transporting furniture across the country. Sometimes the pieces may not be suitable for the new house or apartment.
  • Do gift furniture to family and friends if you don't plan on moving them but know someone who might be interested in them. This is the best way to get rid of furniture before you move - furniture that is still in great condition and perfectly usable.

It is not easy to move furniture from one house to the next. This is because most furniture is heavy and larger than a non-professional can safely handle.

  • Don't bother with furniture moving if it's not worth your time or money. How can you tell? If your furniture is too old or too worn, it won't cost you much to move. Ready-to-assemble furniture such as IKEA is difficult to move and will not survive the move.
  • Don't move furniture that is too dirty or dusty. One, you don't want dirt to get into your new home. Two, the presence of abrasive particles can damage some of the more delicate furniture pieces.
  • You shouldn't attempt to move heavy and bulky furniture without disassembling the pieces in order to make them lighter and more manageable. You could cause damage to your property or injury if you move large furniture without disassembling it first.
  • Don't try to be the hero by moving your furniture all on your own. If you decide that moving furniture is the best decision, you can be realistic and ask for help from your friends.
  • Do not assume your friends will jump to your rescue if they are familiar with the nature of the job. Moving heavy furniture isn't anyone's favorite pastime. If your friends are too busy, you can always have a plan B and hire furniture movers.
